UHPS Room16 2011

Welcome back to our exciting learning environment!
I hope you had a great holiday- and I look forward to reading some of your exciting holiday recounts. We have a very exciting term planned. Over the term we will be Measuring in Maths, reading procedures and experiments and even preparing an item for a school variety show- WoW!

TERM 2 INQUIRY THEME: “MOVEMENT!” How did that get from here to there?

This term our major inquiry focus across the school will be developing an awareness and understanding of motion and forces.

In Room 16 we will be particularly focusing on hands on, practical opportunities to explore every day examples of movement.

We will make simple machines using pulleys, levers and gears. We will also seek to demonstrate and describe simple patterns in physical phenomena, (e.g. push and pull and gravity).

It's going to be a fun term- so let's get ready to move it, move it, move it!

It's the holidays! It's great to have a break isn't it. Over the next couple of weeks you might be really busy with your family and friends. If you have some time and want something to do, here's a couple of ideas:
Maths-
Practise your basic facts- use any of the links on the blog
Increase your basic fact speed by completing some 5 minute frenzies- www.maths_drills.com
Bake a cake- measuring all the ingredients
Take a calculator when you go grocery shopping and add up the total as you go
Make a cool creation/ machine out of geometric blocks or shapes- You can make 3D shapes out of cardboard or paper too- www.senteacher.org/wk/3dshape.php
Draw some graphs about your own statistical investigation- ask your friends a question-e.g: What is your favourite author?
Build with lego. Create something really creative!

Reading- Read your poems to your family
Read books from home
Read texts from educational sites on the internet
Go to the library and get out some new books
Read a magazine
Read a recipe- make something yummy!
Read a craft book- make something creative!

Writing- Write a recount about something fun you do in the holidays
Write a senses poem about a special event in the holidays
Write your own story about Boy Zero and General Pandemonium
Write a letter to someone in your family or a friend
Write instructions to do something
Write some comments on the blog
Write a report or explanation about something you find out about through your reading or experiences in the holidays
Draw an amazing picture and write about it:)

If you do any of these things- please bring them along to school in Term 2 and show us or tell us about your holiday learning!! Happy holidays!

After visiting our bush backyard last week Room 16 decided to write some senses poems. We planned using a W chart included our five senses: touch, sight, sound, taste, smell. We hope you like our poems.

The Bush Walk

I saw little birds flying and rustling plants blooming

I heard leaves whispering and excitement in the air

I smelt fresh plants and smelly mushrooms

I tasted fresh air and the excitement

I felt soft plants and hard rocks.

The scary walk

I saw sharp, long silver ferns and squawking birds

I felt cold and smooth leaves and wrinkly tree bark

I heard tall talking trees and buzzing cicadas

I tasted fresh flower air

I smelt dog poo and fresh plants.

The amazing bush walk

I tasted the fresh air and water splashing up

I heard singing moreporks and chirping birds

I smelt fresh plants and amazing mushrooms

I felt leaves hitting me on the arm.

On Friday the Tipa team had EOTC again and we did team building. We did team building in our PE teams. When my group were doing the blindfold race, Mr Hall got blindfolded! He thought he was being kidnapped! We all giggled as we went to a different game. There were loads of other games, like lily pad hop,cross the river,parachute games and more! It was great fun!
